Chapter 9
Eli had set up his camp in a clearing not far from the cabin. As he tried to fall asleep he thought about Gia out in the night running or four paws. What was she doing? Was she okay? Did wolves have sex? âHell!â he groaned. He needed to know more about this wolf stuff.
Pushing that thought away, he briefly considered the fact that his nylon tent offered no protection against a wolf attack.
Gia had said they were somewhat aware as wolves and wouldnât attack, but she also said she didnât remember much of her wolf self when she was a human.
He tossed and turned, hoping for sleep to come. Just as he was starting to fade off, he heard a noise outside the tent. A snuffling noise, followed by a painful whine.
He didnât think, he just reacted. He opened the tent and aimed the flashlight toward the noise.
A red wolf stood there.
Gia.
She was skittish at first. He reached for her, but she evaded, circling around him, and moving away from the light. He turned on the lantern and crawled out of the tent.
âGia?â he said, and refrained from adding, âHere, girlâ while patting his thighs enthusiastically. She wined again and used her paw to wipe at her face. Thatâs when he saw them. Long needles sticking out of her fur. âAw, baby. Did you get too close to a porcupine?â Of course she didnât answer.
He set the lantern down outside the tent and sat beside it. He couldnât help her if she wouldnât come closer. He had no choice but to wait out her cautiousness.
Fortunately it didnât take long. He was in the middle of a yawn when she stepped up behind him and nudged his shoulder.
âAre you going to let me help you?â he asked.
The only answer was her flopping down on the ground next to him.
He moved the light so he could see and pulled out the all-purpose tool from his bag. Opening up the tool so he could use the pliers, he reassured her.
âItâs going to be okay. Iâm not going to hurt you. Just going to pull those nasty needles out of you.â She twitched when he moved close, but then let out a long sigh and rested her head on his thigh. âCan I just say how weird this is? I mean I knew being in a relationship meant dealing with morning breath, but dog breath?â
With the first tug, she reared back and snapped at the tool in his hand. She moved away from him, pacing just out of reach. The low growl made him sigh.
âOkay, so I said I wasnât going to hurt you, and that wasnât exactly true. But thereâs no need to growl.â
After a few moments she came back and lay next to him again. She put her head down in what he interpreted to be an apology.
It took nearly an hour to get them all out, checking the tips to make sure heâd gotten the entire needle. He stood up and stretched, stiff from sitting on the ground for so long.
